Chorepiscopus: History and Role

The title of Cor-Episcopos (also spelled Chorepiscopus) is a distinguished honorary ecclesiastical rank within the Oriental Orthodox Churches, conferred upon senior priests who have demonstrated exceptional spiritual leadership and devoted service. This designation signifies a rank that is above a regular priest but remains below a bishop.

Historical Origin
The term originates from the Greek chōrepiskopos, literally meaning “country bishop.” Historically, a Chorepiscopus served as the bishop’s deputy, primarily overseeing rural Christian communities situated outside of major urban centers. Over time, the role evolved from an active administrative position into its current symbolic and honorary status, preserving its legacy of essential service and leadership.

Contemporary Role and Authority
In traditions such as the Syriac Orthodox Church, the title is typically awarded to priests after many years of faithful service, and it is often accompanied by the honorific prefix “Very Reverend.” Highly respected within their dioceses, Cor-Episcopoi do not possess full episcopal authority and therefore cannot ordain clergy or perform other episcopal functions. Their vital functions today include mentoring younger priests, offering pastoral guidance, and assisting bishops in ceremonial and administrative duties. The conferral of the title is recognized through a special liturgical service.
