Archdiocesan Clergy Council
The Syriac Orthodox Church traces its sacred origins directly to the earliest days of Christianity, rooted in the Church of Antioch, where the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:26). Founded by St. Peter the Apostle around AD 37, Antioch quickly became a vital center of the faith, uniquely uniting Jewish and Gentile believers. This apostolic foundation established an unbroken line of succession that endures within the Syriac Orthodox Church, which honors the spiritual legacy of St. Peter and his successors, including St. Ignatius Noorono (the Illuminator). The Church, an Oriental Orthodox body, remains firmly grounded in the Nicene Creed. Its early prominence was affirmed at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (AD 325), where the See of Antioch was formally recognized as one of the three principal Patriarchates of Christendom. Despite later theological divisions following the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451), the Syriac Orthodox Church upholds its continuity with the original apostolic succession.
Furthermore, the Church’s influence extended to India (Malankara), where the indigenous Christians trace their faith to the mission of St. Thomas the Apostle (who arrived in Kodungallur in AD 52, converting Jewish and Hindu families). The mission was sustained by his disciples and indigenous Archdeacons. Due to the AD 431 schism, the Malankara Church initially received its hierarchy, liturgy, and East Syriac tradition primarily from the Diocese of Seleucia-Ctesiphon (the Church of the East). This community later faced intense external pressure, particularly Portuguese Latin dominance. This culminated in the Coonan Kurish Oath in 1653, after which they formally appealed to and received a hierarchy from the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, establishing enduring spiritual and administrative ties with the West Syriac tradition.
Today, the Church is led by the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, who acts as the spiritual head and faithfully preserves the apostolic heritage entrusted to Saint Peter, chief among the Apostles. The Patriarchate oversees all worldwide jurisdictions and administration, continuing the ancient tradition of pastoral care and theological stewardship. The Malankara community remains a significant part of this global structure, with a substantial portion of the St. Thomas Christians maintaining their direct lineage and connection with the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch.
The E.A.E. Arch Diocese is under the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church. This archdiocese operates under the direct patronship of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. H. E. Mor Chrysostomos Markose Metropolitan is the Missionary Metropolitan Archbishop of the archdiocese council since 2011. The Council of the Clergy currently consists of 40 members.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
